"After being at WSU for a few months I decided that I needed something more than the organizations that were already present. I felt there was a need for an organization that provided academic, professional, as well as personal support at the WSU campus. I discovered a group of women that were looking for the same thing and after months of searching we decided on Gamma Alpha Omega. As a founding mother I strongly believe in a diverse membership, a commitment to academics, excellence and a proactive vision towards raising awareness about Chicano/Latino culture and history. United with our sisters by our common goals and through the efforts of GAO, we hope to affect change and provide our communities with examples of leadership, integrity and self-empowerment that will allow us to challenge adversity and inequality. Meanwhile, also fostering a cohesive and supportive environment for all our GAO sisters and building a bond that will unite us for a lifetime. For those reasons, I am Gamma Alpha Omega, Delta Chapter Founding Mother and will cherish GAO and my sisters forever."

"There were several student organizations on the WSU campus that I was involved with, but none that truly provided an environment where Latinas could get together without restrictions and be able to voice their opinions freely and count on a network of support. I was looking for an organization that not only served as a network for emotional support, but also highly regarded the importance of higher education and being involved politically. I found out I was not alone in this crusade; a group of Latinas and myself had learned about Gamma Alpha Omega and became very interested. Finally! We had found an organization that provided exactly what we had been looking for! Since the beginning of the process in establishing the Delta Chapter of GAO at WSU, it has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride that involved good times, not so good times, great times and bad times. However, through it all I have grown tremendously both intellectually and emotionally and know that I would not be able to be successful if it weren't for my Sisters. To this day, I continue to count on their support."

"I chose GAO because I wanted to bring an atmosphere of a home away from home for women. I wanted a sense of family and a support group that would help me and other women like me emotionally, socially and academically. GAO offered all of this and gave me a bond that is with me after college, a real sisterhood."

"I came to WSU looking for a "family" that would accept me for me. I knew I wanted to join a non-traditional (non-Pan Hellenic) sorority, but I wasn't sure where I belonged. So, I got together with a group of women to discuss the ideas of a Latina sorority. When deciding on a sorority to bring to WSU, we did a lot of research. I found Gamma to be the one that would not only benefit myself but the other women on our campus. It has been a vital part of my years at WSU, both as an undergrad and Alumni."

"My first year at WSU I heard that the first Chicana/Latina sorority GAO was starting up. I was not sure that I wanted to be in this type of organization but I went ahead and learned more about it. I can tell you know that was one of the best decisions that I made during my academic career. This organization was big on academics and community service and so was I. Also, the pillars of Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity were ones that I had already been living my life by and one I would live my life by. I became a Charter Member and I helped to bring this sorority to WSU. Throughout my years at WSU, I made so many memories and I met so many wonderful sisters through GAO. Wherever I go I will never forget Gamma!!"

I chose GAO to have a support system within the Chicana/Latina community, and to endure long lasting friendships built on Honesty and Integrity. I chose GAO for the pillars it stands by which are Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity. I will never forget the long lasting friendships I have acquired as a member."

"Becoming a sister of Gamma Alpha Omega has been one of the best decisions of my life. More than GAO being a decision, it was fate. It was fate and luck that these beautiful and inspiring women have come into my life and it was due to the power of GAO that I could call these women my sisters. They have provided me with a family that I will cherish and protect for the rest of my life. My times with Gamma Alpha Omega have been filled with educational and personal achievements that have strengthened my character as a woman, a scholar, and an activist."

Some of the incredible memories of Gamma that I hold dear to me range from getting Charter status to baking cookies and listening to Michael Jackson. I've learned from the love and dedication that all of my sisters show towards each other. I've learned to love unconditionally and be supportive through all efforts these women exert. I call them my sisters, bonded by love and respect."

In a matter of days, I was able to form bonds and officially found myself with a family unlike no other. The five pillars for which GAO stands for are strong and are qualities that I find valuable and important to posses. Joining GAO has been one of the most significant decisions I have ever made and am proud of being a member of such a wonderful sisterhood. Being the first member in my family to attend college, I felt I had a lot of pressure to be successful. When I first found out about Gamma Alpha Omega, I didn't know anything about sororities. As I researched more about Gamma I was attracted to the community service. I liked the thought of giving back to the community. Gamma also provided academic support and positive role models. Furthermore, it has assisted me in getting closer to my culture and learning about other's traditions. In these past years as an active member of the Distinguished Delta Chapter, I have gained leadership skill and friendships that I will forever treasure. Gamma Alpha Omega has become my family away from home."

"Since I came to WSU, I sought an opportunity to join an organization which understood my needs as a "Mujer Latina." Although the Chicano Latino Center offered certain opportunities, it was not until my last year at WSU I heard of a new organization that sounded promising and seemed to target all my needs. As I learned more about Gamma Alpha Omega, I realized, this organization provided not only what I sought for, but opened my eyes to even greater needs, as a part of a community. The basic principles of Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity are the most powerful combination of tools to assist a community in need. Although most organizations focused on assisting the community, none had acquired such combination of values to integrate into my life, to offer the community. New generations come each year to a community that is predominantly, Anglo; I was faced with that fact and did not know where or who to turn to. Now, new generations have a new door to open, a place to find comfort, a place that will present challenges, a place to grow, a place to find long lasting friendships, and a place to find a family. I can honestly say, without hesitation, that it is because of Gamma and the wonderful sisters I had that supported me and encouraged me to stay in school and achieve my goal of earning my Bachelor's Degree in Advertising. I thank Gamma for bringing each and everyone of my sisters into my life. Becoming a sister of GAO is one of the best choices I have made in life. I went to one of their informational meetings and after that I had talked to some of the members. I remember a long conversation I had with Veronica Mendez, one of our founding mothers. She talked about Gamma with such pride. That's when I decided that Gamma was for me. I liked everything it stood for and the sisterhood that these girls showed me. I became a member of Gamma on December 5, 1998 a day I will never forget. To my line sisters--I love you all and we did it together. My mentor, through the WSU Chicano(a)/Latino(a) Student Center, Mareth Flores (a Delta Chapter Founding Mother) told me about GAO and invited me to an informational meeting. I then pledged the Fall semester of 1998. Pledging GAO was the best decision I made while in college. GAO's pillars, the bonding experienced during the pledge process and the community service are some of the many reasons that attracted me to the sorority. I've gained so many beautiful sisters (which I've always wanted since only growing up with an older brother) and am happy to have found an organization to be a part of for the rest of my life!!!"

Everything GAO represents (Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship & Unity) are things that I wholeheartedly believe in. For example, GAO gave me support, resources, two beautiful line sisters, and most importantly unconditional love! I can honestly say that my sisters became my family away from family. "When I first came to WSU-it was hard for me to hang out with people of my own culture-only because I felt the Center wasn't as welcoming. I tried to check out what they had to offer support-wise, but it just didn't feel right. All that changed when I found out about Gamma Alpha Omega and what they had to offer. Finally, I had found an organization that was ideal for what I was looking for as a support system while in school: friendship, fun times and many good memories, the sisterhood, and lots of unconditional love. But more importantly, they offered academic and professional support for myself as a Chicana/Latina pursuing a higher education. Also, it allowed me to get more involved with my community and do things to help others within the community; and that is a great feeling! Through Gamma-I learned more about other Chicanas/Latinas like me and about my culture. I have found an even greater strength and confidence within myself through Gamma. GAO has always brought out the best in me and I am thankful for all that Gamma is and what it represents. It's the sisters that make up Gamma that have really had an amazing impact on my life. We all share a lot of the same beliefs and morals and are all pursuing a common goal and we are all bonded in such a sacred and dear way. I am proud to represent GAO through our pillars of Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and especially, Unity. I will always be honored to be a sister of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. I love my sisters! Gamma is in my heart-por vida!"

Even though I did my part on defending GAO, since I know what it represents, people would still voice their opinion. I chose to come back to GAO because of its principles, Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship and Unity. They all describe a part of me, and they are all principals that EVERY women of color should hold upon their arrival here at WSU, or any other school of higher education. In the near future, I want to advocate for these women of color to make sure they: 1) get a role model they can identify with, 2) get the support and encouragement necessary, and 3) to follow up on them to make sure that they set long-term goals to better their self-esteem and secure their future. "The reasons why I chose Gamma Alpha Omega are because when I first came to WSU I felt like an outsider. Being a minority made me feel like I didn't belong since there is so little diversity (only 3.3% latinos @WSU). But anyways, I needed to be a part of an organization that would make me feel proud about who I am. When I met the active members for the first time they felt like old friends and made me feel comfortable being around them. As I learned more about Gamma I really respected everything it stood for. I knew from the first info meeting I went to, that I wanted to be a part of Gamma. My pledge class was faced with difficult challenges, but we came together to overcome them and with that, we were able to form an unbreakable bond that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Although I was already involved and still continue to be a part of other organizations on campus before becoming a Gamma, I feel that this organization offers not only opportunities to help out the Pullman community, but it offers much more. It offers a wonderful sisterhood and I feel that with the support of my sisters I will become an even stronger person, leader and scholar, than what I am now."

"I knew that when I came to WSU I wanted to be involved, especially in the Latino community. I did some research and came across Gamma...Of all the organizations I looked into Gamma had everything I was looking for: community service, friendship, and leadership. Getting to know the Gamma girs made my decision even clearer because they truly represented what the organization stands for. I look forward to continuing the great accomplishments that the older Gammas have done. I know joining Gamma was the best decision I have made at WSU." :)

"I always knew that I would attend WSU but I never thought that I would join a sorority. My very good friends "the Lauras" got me excited about joining. They were the ones who always kept me up to date about what was happening with Gamma. I loved the idea of joining because they were doing it. I loved being around them. I got closer to them during the process. I also met my wonderful line sisters, who I love. They are wonderful and would not trade any of them for anything in the world. Gamma has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful women who I know I will stay in touch with for the rest of my life."

"I decided to join Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. because it reminded me of what I had back home, a family. The values and pillars of Gamma Alpha Omega not only paralleled my own but enhanced them as well. I knew that by joining Gamma I would find the support and encouragement to succeed in my academics. This organization has also given me the opportunity to get involved and give back to the community. In addition GAO has granted me five beautiful line sisters which I have learned so much from. To my Lambdas, I love you all and will forever cherish all the memories we have together. I am truly proud to form part of GAO and look forward to all the years of sisterhood that are yet to come. Gamma Alpha Omega has given me the greatest gift of all, sisters."

"When I first arrived to the campus of WSU, I was full of emotions and uncertainty. As the weeks went on by I had found a group of determined ladies that impacted me to where I wanted to see myself involved. The mere fact that these ladies were based on five pillars: Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity, and to see that each and every one of them carried these distinct characteristics was enough for me. Gamma Alpha Omega has the opportunity to provide our communities with exceptional role models. Not only do these role models carry such individuality, but the also carry the strength and dedication to succeed in what ever obstacle is presented. This strong organization gives back to the community, and at the same time it also allows each individual to grow and empower themselves. That is powerful! Gamma has created a special bond with each and every single one of my "sisters." I can truly say that if I ever were to need anything my sisters would be there for me. This is my family away from home..This bond that was created is destined to be everlasting!!!!"

" I knew it was for me, I just knew it. As a transfer student I was hesitant to devote myself to anything, especially because I was beginning my first semester here at Washington State. However, I became acquainted with the members and was further informed on the Sorority and all that Gamma Alpha Omega offered. I was amazed by the women and how well they spoke of their Sorority—I couldn’t help but think “I want that too.” Crossing into Gamma Alpha Omega has introduced me to accountability to my Sorority, an everlasting sisterhood and pride for what we do and how we behave. I would do it all over again—I would go through another twelve weeks if I had to. It’s just worth it. I have such appreciation for my letters because they represent my Sorority. I have such appreciation for my Sorority because it drives me to improve personally and academically, while I aid others in doing the same."

" When I found out about this great sorority was on the campus of WashingtonState University, I was excited to find out more information. As i found outmore information i was drawn in to join and hopefully be part of Gamma AlphaOmega Sorority Inc. I pledged and went through the process, and found outthat this organization upholds all five pillars that i truely believe in. Ibelieve Scholarship is very important pillar in my life, that is the reasonwhy i am here at Washington State University. Honesty is also an importantpillar, being honest with yourselves and everyone around you is thefoundation to a great relationship. Being honest with everyone can helpconstruct a strong brigde with all gamma sisters; that no one can break. Ihave seen how these ladies of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority Inc., have carriedthemselves and have upheld there pillars strong. I am honored to say I ampart of these great sorority, and i will too uphold my pillars strong; haveno doubt!! Thank you!

"I transferred to WSU from a small college in the Yakima Valley in the fall of 05. One of the reasons for my transfer was that I knew that a bigger University would bring bigger opportunities for me. I started meeting many of the Gammas my first semester here and I truly enjoyed their company. I liked the way they would carry themselves around others and the bond they had within each other. I also started learning about the organization and what they were about and how they stayed involved in their community. I liked all those ideas and wanted to be a part of a sisterhood. So I went through the process, which was a rather bumpy one but today I can say that being a Gamma is awesome! I am so glad that I am a part of Gamma Alpha Omega, a group of Distinguished Damas!

"Joining GAO, I feel was one of the best decisions I have made, next to coming back to school. I came to Washington State University in hopes to better myself personally and professionally. I believe that GAO will definitely give me the opportunity to achieve both of those goals and so much more. Becoming a member has given me not only a chance to help out myself academically wise, but also gives me a chance to help out the community as well. Its through community service that you learn about yourself and your surroundings and become a better leader. Also through GAO I have not only gain three awesome line sisters, but also a whole nation of sisters. And hopefully a better bond between my blood sister, Marquita and me. I am thankful for the opportunity to be apart of a great organization and for my new sisters. Thank you all.

"I am a very shy person, and I have to first decide if I want to do something. After four years, I finally decided that I wanted to be part of something here at WSU. This opportunity came in the form of Gamma Alpha Omega, Sorority Inc. I never imagined I would be in a sorority, but I really wanted to be a part of something that I could take with me even after graduation. I wanted to also help out my community, and meet new people. I knew a couple of the members from a while back, and so I always had this interest in the organization. After going through the process, I can truly say that I learned many things! I have much appreciation for the little things that people never notice. GAO has also given me that opportunity to find friends in my line sisters. We all have our differences, but together we make something unique. I don’t think I would have ever met these women, if I had never wanted to take part of this Organization. I am so glad I did, and now I have gained even more sisters, and friends as well.

“I am a transfer student from Wenatchee Valley College. When I transferred here I did not know anyone, until I ran into Lucy Garibay and Laura Covarrubias at the fall step show. I had actually gone to high school with them and they told me about GAO and the buddy program. After attending a couple of socials, I began to understand what Gamma was all about and decided to join; the reason being that it was nice to have group of women who had the same academic, personal, and professional goals as I do. Not to mention that it meant having a great group of friends, and now sisters”

"As I was acquainting myself with the lovely ladies of the Sorority, I immediately realized that I could be myself and not have to walk on eggshells. This sparked my interest and led me to become further educated on all that Gamma Alpha Omega offered. The things that really amazed me were how each of the ladies carried themselves (not only with each other but with other people), how close they were to one another, and the pride/ esprit de corps that they felt towards their organization and their community. Being a part of the Buddy Program showed me how determined and dedicated these ladies were to improving their lives and also improving the lives of people within their community. I got to witness firsthand that they were not only members of the same organization but that they were truly “sisters” and were working hard to strengthen their bond so that they could be the best that they could be. All the volunteer work, community service, etc that they do is not just done because they have do; it’s done because they really want to give back to their community. The day I became a Gamma, was one of the best days of my life. It has opened so many doors for me and taught me so many things about myself and my culture. Now that I’m in the sorority, I am fully aware of everything it has to offer and would go through the whole process all over again if I had to. And to the ladies of the Xi Class—SFD, we did it!
